I met Eddie a few years ago. We were both single players on a random day on this very same course we played today. I had some slow players in front and I asked him if he wanted to join. He did.
That moment of inviting a stranger into a round of golf is important to remember as the story continues. Without that moment, there is no friend called Eddie for Roger.
We had a lot of fun finishing that round, swapped contact and scheduled a full round. Eddie is almost 10 years older than me. So, he’s 70 but man he can hit the golf ball. Today he had five birdies. Five, let that sink in.
To be fair, I had 9 pars, but 0 birdies.
Anyway, this isn’t about me. This is about Eddie and why you need a friend like Eddie. He spends part of the time in Thailand and other part in Japan. When he’s in town we try to play two times a week followed by a meal.
These are the types of friends that ground you. Oh, and they force you to be a better golfer. The course we met and played on is Siam Country Club Waterside. The course name can be scary forcing people to think every hole has a water hazard. The truth is only a few holes are over water – most are just next to it.
And if you’re lucky you’ll see the local Komodo Dragon.
Eddie got me back into playing tournaments and reminded me how much I love Japanese food. Hokkaido milk is my favorites. One day, I hope to visit to personally thank the cows for perfect milk.
I hope you enjoyed We all need an Eddie
I can’t imagine my life without Eddie as a friend.
I’ll be sharing stories here about golf, coffee, and sometimes golf & coffee. Subscribe and I’ll promise some gamification around both
